The objective of the project is to identify means to support the Dominican Republic’s capacity to fulfill its obligations in the context of the Stockholm Convention, including the preparation of a National Implementation Plan focused on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), that will more widely cover aspects important to the safe and environmentally sound management of chemicals and wastes, as called for in Chapters 19 and 20 of Agenda 21.

In the framework of the Stockholm Convention which aims to protect human health and the environment from POPs, the project will: i) establish the basis for implementing the Convention in El Salvador; ii) assist El Salvador in fulfilling its data declaration and other reporting obligations under the Convention; iii) reinforce El Salvador's national capacity to manage POPs and hazardous chemicals in general.

Action Plan Training/Skills Building for 25 Least Developed Countries to assist with National Implementation Plan Development under the Stockholm Convention

Least Developed Countries that are receiving GEF funding for NIP development are required to develop action plans on specific Stockholm Convention-related issues. Skills building/training on action plan development, combined with concrete follow-up activities will assist least developed countries to have the necessary tools to fully plan for and document the costed interventions necessary for implementation of the Convention.

Preparing for HCFC phase out in CEITs: needs, benefits and potential synergies with other MEAs

The project’s primary goal is to carry out in-depth surveys of HCFC consumption and, where applicable, production in Article 2 countries with economies in transition (CEITs) in Europe and Central Asia (specifically Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, the Russian Federation, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and the Ukraine), and identify needs for further activities to assist these countries to remain in compliance with their Montreal Protocol obligations.
