The Burundi: Agricultural Rehabilitation and Support Project (PRASAB) - Support for Sustainable Land Management, a blended IDA-GEF project, aims at reducing poverty and improving food security by revitalizing the agricultural sector and strengthening the natural resource base of its production. In this blended operation, GEF funds will supplement IDA financing of the PRASAB and cover the incremental costs of activities associated with the promotion of sustainable land management that is eligible for GEF funding.

PCB Management and Disposal Demonstration

The objective of the project is to remove the threats to human health and the environment posed by PCBs presently in unsafe temporary storage, as well as PCBs in use, in a demonstration area to be determined during project preparation. Options for disposal would be assessed during project preparation. The project would be the basis for dissemination of experience and a replication program in China and globally.

As stated in the NAPA directives, this project’s justification resides in the fact that it will readily incorporate measures of adaptation to the adverse effects of present and future climate changes in the national poverty reduction programme. The project equally seeks to contribute to the capacity building of local expertise and partners on the ground in order to address the requirements for adaptation to new environmental conditions through a participatory approach. Information contained in the NAPA should help in preparing the second national communication for Guinea.

The development objective is to contribute to the effective protection and sustainable use of the water and land resources of the Amazon Basin, based upon the principles of integrated water resources management (IWRM), and manage the effects of climate change (CC) within Amazonian communities in a coordinated and coherent way. This will be accomplished by the eight signatory countries of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty, within the framework of the ACTO, through a program of strategic interventions.

The principal objective of the proposed SPRE II program is to expand rural electricity service in the central and southern provinces of Lao PDR through grid extension and off-grid electrification. Initial proposals call for 50,000-75,000 households to be provided with electricity access via EdL’s grid-connection component and another 18,000 households to be provided with electricity access via an off-grid component utilizing solar, village hydro, distributed engine-generator sets, and other mini-grid technologies.

The development objectives of the HUTDP are to help Hanoi City to (a) increase the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of its transport system, and (b) develop public transport-compatible urban growth plans. Its GEF strategic objectives are to promote a shift to more environmentally-sustainable transport modes and urban development plans, and to promote the replication of these approaches in the country and region. Its global environment objective is to lower Hanoi’s transport-related greenhouse gas emissions, relative to a business-as-usual scenario.
