This project seeks to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by providing technical assistance to small and medium-sized steel rerolling mills in India that will enable them to adopt more energy efficient and environmentally friendly technologies. For capacity building and information dissemination, the Ministry of Steel will establish a center for training, information and capacity strengthening on a sustained basis. It will also develop institutional linkages with energy-service companies for providing off-the-shelf technologies from international equipment vendors.

The project aims at reducing Lesotho’s energy-related CO2 emissions by introducing renewable energy technologies as a substitute for fossil fuel (paraffin and diesel) in rural areas remote from the national electricity grid and improving people’s livelihoods by improving their access to and affordability of modern energy services. In addition, the project will decrease the growing number of rural poor, adults and children alike, who contract respiratory and eye problems due to prolonged exposure to paraffin smoke and soot (poor indoor air quality).

Partnerships for Marine Protected Areas in Mauritius

Project Brief
The objective of this project is to the assist the Government of Mauritius to improve the management and conservation practice for Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the country, including Rodriguez, and the equitable sharing of benefits to the local communities. It will do so through the development and testing of a model for co-management between government, local communities and the private sector, and through building an enabling environment for its replication throughout the country.

This project has a primary focus on the degradation of the marine and coastal environment due to land-based activities. Three objectives have been identified: Reduce stress to the ecosystem by improving water and sediment quality; Strengthen regional legal basis for preventing land-based sources of pollution; and Develop regional capacity and strengthen institutions for sustainable, less polluting development. These three objectives will provide a strong basis for sustainable environmental management in the Western Indian Ocean region in the future.

The main objective of the project is to protect the Caribbean marine environment by reducing the use of, and reliance on, pesticides in agricultural activities. The project will assist Colombia, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Panama to implement management practices and measures to control the use of pesticides in the agricultural sector.

The project will develop an agreed strategic action program for the sustainable management of the Bay of Bengal Large Marine(LME) Ecosystem. The executing agency (FAO) would work with the 7 governments to address transboundary marine resources issues along the coast of this LME.
