Integration of Ecosystem Management Principles and Practices into Land and Water Management of Slovakia’s Eastern Lowlands

The project will contribute to mainstreaming integrated ecosystem management principles and practices into the land and water management and agricultural sectors of new EU members and accession states within the context of the EU Rural Development Programme 2007 - 2013 and Danube River Protection Convention. The purpose of the proposed project is to facilitate a sustainable transition by water managers, farmers and other resource managers in Slovakia’s Eastern Lowlands from conventional water and agricultural management techniques to integrated ecosystem management practices.

Assessment of Existing Capacity and Capacity Building Needs to Analyze POPs in Developing Countries

The overall objective of the project is to assess the convention-driven country needs for laboratory analysis and the conditions necessary to conduct them in a sustainable manner, including on a regional basis if appropriate. The feasibility of establishing a fully equipped laboratory in a developing country that may be able to analyze all twelve POPs, including dioxins and furans in relevant matrices will be explored through a pilot study.

Enabling activities for the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs): National Implementation Plan for Costa Rica

Within the overall objective of the Stockholm Convention, which is to protect human health and the environment from POPs, the project will: i. Prepare the ground for implementation of the Convention in The Republic of Costa Rica; ii. Assist The Republic of Costa Rica in meeting its reporting and other obligations under the Convention; and iii. Strengthen Costa Rica’s national capacity to manage POPs and chemicals generally.
