The objective of the proposed NAPA project for Sierra Leone is to develop a country-wide programme of immediate and urgent project-based adaptation activities that address the current and anticipated adverse effects of climate change.

The national objective aims to enable the elaboration and efficient implementation of appropriate measures to ensure biological diversity conservation and sustainable use, which will contribute to meeting the country's commitments in compliance with the international conventions relative to biological diversity.

The objectives of NAPAs are: -To serve as simplified and direct channels of communication for information relating to the urgent and immediate needs for adaptation in Senegal -To facilitate capacity building for the preparation of national communications, and addressing urgent and immediate adaptation needs. Linkages to ongoing activities: Under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Rwanda has begun the preparation of its first national communication.

The project responds to the need for integrated ecosystem management of the Barycz Valley. The valley presents a mosaic of various ecosystem types (wetlands, agro-ecosystems, forest ecosystems) )and land uses ranging from agriculture, fisheries and protected areas. New developments put increasing pressure on the natural resources and the functional integrity of the ecosystems are under threat. The project will ensure conservation of biodiversity within the process of regional socio-economic development in the Barycz Valley.

The overall objective of the proposed Enabling Activities is to strengthen national capacity and capability to prepare a National Implementation Plan (NIP) for the management of POPs. This plan will provide a basic and essential level of information to enable policy and strategic decisions to be made and identify priority activities that Sierra Leone should undertake in order to meet the requirements of the Stockholm Convention. It will be endorsed by all stakeholders before transmission to the Conference of Parties (COP).

The principal objective of the Project is to introduce decentralized options, including those based on renewable energy technologies (RETs), into the present electrification plan for rural areas. Assistance to the GOH would include: (a) support for the development of a rational rural electrification policy (b) financing of decentralized minigrid projects that demonstrate sustainable private sector or community-based operation, and (c) support for the creation of a wider market for photovoltaic (PV) through appropriate incentives to both providers and users.

The main objective is to overcome the barriers to the update of biomass technology by providing examples of best practice (demonstration plants) in the use of biomass fuelled energy systems as a viable alternative to fossil fuels and as a sustainable means of addressing the energy supply problems facing rural communities and agro-enterprises.

The long-term goal of the full project is: to secure the long-term sustenance of the biological diversity of wetlands in Botswana and contribute to the conservation of wetland biodiversity regionally and globally. The purpose is to put in place community and private sector-based adaptive management models for globally significant wetland ecosystems in the Okavango delta which will ensure the long-term sustenance of its biodiversity. To achieve this, the project will develop and dissemination of best management practices for conservation in the productive landscape.

The long term goal of the full GEF project is the sustainable management of natural resources to protect biodiversity and contribute to equitable economic and social development. The more immediate objective of the full project is to improve management effectiveness of the National System of Protected Areas. The project is divided into two phases, each with a six-year duration.

The proposed Support Programme will provide technical assistance to countries with respect to implementation of the Strategic Approach to Enhance Capacity Building (GEF/C.22.8)(hereafter referred to as the Strategic Approach), which was approved by the GEF Council during its 22nd session.
