The objective of the assessment of needs in Mongolia is to gain a better understanding of the capacity development needs in the context of Mongolia’s priorities for addressing global environment challenges, and to gain better understanding of how the global system may assist Mongolia to address these capacity development needs. At present more then 70 countries are involved in the implementation of the GEF/LME’s projects all other the world. The present project will strengthen the capacities of the countries participating in the GEF/LME’s projects by providing necessary training and building scientific capacity in ecosystem-based fisheries assessment and management. Several participants from the countries involved in the development and implementation of the GEF/LME’s projects will be attending the 4th World Fisheries Congress and will be actively involved in the Congress courses, workshops, and training sessions.

The NCSA process will afford Barbados an important opportunity to conduct a thorough assessment of its national capacity to assist in protecting the global environment by effectively implementing the Rio Conventions, specifically the Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Convention on Biological Diversity (UNCBD) and the Convention to Combat Drought and Desertification (UNCCD). It will also contribute to the implementation of the broader National Sustainable Development Policy.

The project enables the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro to prepare the first Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan, through two Republic Strategies, and the first National Report as the initial step to follow up on the national commitments to the Convention of Biodiversity ratified in 2002. The components of the project are: a) Stocktaking, inventory and analysis of existing information and preparation of the Country Study; b) identification and analysis of available options; c) preparation of a Strategy and Action Plan; d) submission of First National Report and launching of BSAP.

The implementation of the NCSA will be linked to both the Integrated Rural Sustainable Development Strategy (IRSDS) and the Urban Renewal Programme (URP) of the Government of South Africa. In this way, the NCSA initiative will form part of the efforts directed at addressing South Africa’s development challenges. This will be achieved primarily through the identification of projects within the IRSDS and the URP that will be used as pilots for the NCSA process.
