This project which builds on the achievements of the GEF-funded pilot phase project seeks to operationalize the recently passed Coastal Zone Management Act. This Act provides the institutional framework for the implementation of targeted interventions for biodiversity protection. Belize's coastal zone is made up of globally significant diversity of ecosystems and organisms, including the longest barrier reef (220 km long) in the Western Hemisphere. Project Appraisal Document (for CEO Endorsement)Project Document for WPScanned Letter CEO Endorsement to Council
The SDC concept originates from a unique partnership between the World Bank Group and a number of U.S. charitable foundations as a response to the gap between the enormous potential demand for electricity in off-grid markets and the very limited supply to date of off-grid power from photovoltaic (PV) systems – despite PV’s apparent ability to produce reliable and relatively cost-effective power in off-grid applications. The objective of SDC is to increase the delivery of solar home systems (SHS) and thus bring environmentally clean electricity to rural households in developing countries.

Lop Nur Nature Sanctuary Biodiversity Conservation

Project Document for CEO Approval
The Lop Nur region of Gashun Gobi desert, formerly a nuclear testing site, was recently declared by the Chinese Government as a Nature Sanctuary. The Lop Nur Sanctuary is home to the last surviving genetically pure herd of wild Bactrian camels (Camelus bactrianus ferus) in the world. With the cessation of nuclear testing, it was critical that the area be granted protected status to prevent damaging human encroachment of this unique Central Asian dry-land ecosystem, especially by illegal miners and hunters, the most serious threats to the wild camel’s survival.
