The objective of the project is the development of a strategy for the sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity with the participation of local communities and administrations. The project supports dialogue and lays the basis for a more environmentally grounded development plan for the refion given that the recently proposed development programs fro the region have presented conceptual and methodological differences in approach with respect to the cultural systems of its inhabitants and to their relationship with the natural environment.

This GEF medium-size project will build upon the experience gained from the pilot phase to expand the identification, characterization, and prioritization to a national level, facilitating the establishment of regional workgroups that will act according to local realities and with the support of the generated information. The project will also promote the importance of wetlands among environmental and decision-making groups.

The project aims to facilitate development of safe and efficacious healthcare relying on traditional medicine and medicinal plants while protecting the resource base and implementing measures to reduce pressure on wild populations of rare and endemic species. Specifically it is aimed at resolving problems of habitat destruction, erosion of biodiversity, loss of traditional knowledge and practices, rural poverty and primary healthcare in the regional setting.

This project is intended to set up a commercial Rural Energy Service Company (ESCO) that charges a fee for the electricity supplied to the consumers as a sustainable institutional framework to operate the renewable energy system in Nabouwalu, for replication in other parts of Fiji. The commercial operation of the renewable-energy-based Rural ESCO is expected to reduce the operation and maintenance costs, mobilize more funding for rural electrification, thereby promoting widespread utilization of renewable energy in Fiji.
