The project will support the ongoing initiative by the Government of Zanzibar, with the help of CARE, to promote integrated conservation and development activities in the Jozani-Chwaka Conservation Area, the single most important site for the conservation of Zanzibar's globally significant biodiversity. The project will establish Jozani-Chwaka Bay national park, developing Biodiversity Conservation, Community Based Natural Resources Management programmes and improving the institutional capacity in natural resources management.

This project aims to provide parallel support to a Solar Water Heater business plan in South Africa in order to overcome market barriers for widespread use of SWHs. The plan was designed and negotiated as part of the application of the FINESSE strategy in South Africa where 9000 solar water heaters are to be installed over 5 years in a low-income housing peri-urban upgrade. The parallel activities, contingent on the business plan, provide specific support to the business plan but predominantly engineer a change in the market environment for SWHs nationally.

The overall goal of the project is to reduce the contamination of the Arctic environment by persistent toxic substances (PTS). Recent studies have shown significantly elevated environmental levels of PTS in the Russian Arctic, where, due to the present economic problems, consumption of highly contaminated country food by indigenous peoples is increasing (walrus, bowhead whale, etc.).
