The overall objective of the proposed project is to promote mainstreaming of biodiversity and institutional consolidation at national level.

The objective of the proposed project is to support (a) the conservation of highly threatened biodiversity – a global benefit - and (b) the maintenance of environmental services provided by the rain forest ecosystem in the watersheds important to the state’s population and to the local economy. As such, it supports GEF’s global goals of conserving globally significant biodiversity, mainstreaming biodiversity into production landscapes and managing ecosystems in an integrated fashion. Water management activities will be funded from the Bank loan and the state’s own resources.

To introduce integrated ecosystem and water management to conserve biodiversity and improve environmental conditions in the Baiyangdian Basin.

This project is aimed at reducing GHG emissions and improve air quality through rationalization and energy efficiency measures in the transport sector and sound land-use management in the Latin American region.

To reduce environmental and human health risks from PCBs releases through the introduction of cost-effective environmentally sound management (ESM) to PCB oils, equipment and wastes held by electrical utilities in participating countries of the region

The key focus of the proposed GEF Alternative will be setting up the framework for the new System that would increase the effectiveness of on the ground action. It will thus provide an umbrella function to all Protected Area work in Chile - including those funded through GEF – through a Programme Approach to BD-1 in Chile further described in section E.

The long-term national Goal of the full GEF project is: Consolidating the Protected Areas System as a key component of sustainable development in Costa Rica. The Project Objective is: To overcome the major systemic and institutional barriers to sustainability of the Costa Rican Protected Area System. There are five planned outcomes in support of the project’s stated objective.

The CBA project and program is aimed at: (i) developing a framework, including new knowledge and capacity, that spans the local to the intergovernmental levels to respond to unique community-based adaptation needs; (ii) identifying and financing diverse community-based adaptation projects in a number of selected countries; and (iii) capturing and disseminating lessons learned at the community level to all stakeholders, including governments.

The goal of the proposed initiative is to reduce Kenya’s (and to some extent also for the other EAC countries) energy related CO2 emissions by improving the energy efficiency of selected appliances and equipment in the residential, commercial and industrial sectors.

The objective of the project is to reduce the growth of the energy consumption and the related greenhouse gas emissions of the transport sector in Egypt, while simultaneously mitigating the local environmental and other problems of increasing traffic such as deteriorated urban air quality and congestion.
