GEF resources will be used to assist Mauritius to meet the objective of the Cartagena Protocol (to contribute to ensuring an adequate level of protection in the field of the safe transfer, handling and use of living modified organisms resulting from modern biotechnology that may have adverse effects on the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity, taking also into account risks to human health, and specifically focusing on transboundary movements) and therefore will be directed to support the implementation of the NBF in Mauritius.

The overall goal of the project is that by 2009 Egypt has a workable and transparent national biosafety framework, in line with its national development priorities and international obligations.

Chile is one the 12 pilot countries participating in the pilot project "Development of National Implementation Plans for the Management of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs)". The project was part of the work program approved by the May 2001 Council meeting. That same meeting also approved the Guidelines for POPs enabling activities. This proposal is for an add-on that would allow Chile to complete the work needed to finalise its NIP. This add-on requested by Chile was envisaged at time of WP approval and CEO endorsement.

The global environment objective is to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions by implementing large-scale, grid-connected wind energy systems in Uruguay. The strategic goal of this initiative is to remove the present barriers for the commercial development of wind energy in the country and establish a viable showcase and basis for replication.

The project development objectives are: (i) to support the design and implementation of several access expansion, intensification and renewable energy pilot projects.

This project will initiate Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) frameworks in the Pangani River Basin of Northern Tanzania. These frameworks will address climate change and pilot adaptation measures. It is one of the first field-based climate change preparation projects in Eastern Africa with strong links to basin and national planning and policy, and as such will build national and regional capacity, provide lessons and serve as a national and regional demonstration site.

This project represents one integral element of a tri-national initiative represented by three complementary projects in Mongolia, Russia and Kazakhstan that are adopting an ecoregional approach to the conservation of biodiversity in a globally significant international trans-boundary setting, the Altai-Sayan ecoregion.

Objective of the project is that by 2009 Lithuania has a workable and transparent National Biosafety Framework (NBF) in line with its national development priorities and international obligations in order to comply with the requirements of CPB through the indicated national capacity building needs.
