The GEF project will be developed as a "fully blended" GEF component of the Agricultural and Rural Roads Project (PO 95251) which is under preparation. The development objective of the proposed Agricultural and Rural Roads Project is to contribute to the diversification of the oil-dominated economy of the Republic of Congo by supporting the development of alternative economic activities in rural and urban areas.

The development objective of the project is to support sustainable improvements to the urban environment in the province through implementation of sector reforms and high priority investments in water supply, wastewater collection and treatment, and solid waste management in selected municipalities.

The objective of this initiative is to remove barriers to the adoption of more efficient energy technologies and to the propagation of renewable energy. The current proposal relates to piloting an approach for the voluntary adoption of clean energy standards for distributed equipment by manufacturers and financial intermediaries in Sri Lanka.

The overall goal of this project is to assist Viet Nam to have a workable and transparent national biosafety framework by 2010, to fulfill its obligations as a Party to the Cartagena Protocol on biosafety, and to comply with the country’s Agenda 21, the government strategy on development of biotechnology (Resolution 18/CP), and the National Action Plan for biosafety (NAPB). The overall goal of this project is to enable Ghana better meet its immediate obligations under the Convention on Biological Diversity, especially in relation to Article 6: General Measures for Conservation and Sustainable Use: Article 13: Public Education and Awareness; Article 18: Technical and Scientific Cooperation.

The objective of the IDB CleanTech Fund, which the proposed GEF component will complement, is to make equity or quasi-equity investments in small- to medium-size enterprises (SMEs) that implement renewable energy power production projects that reduce the use of fossil fuel use in the Latin American and Caribbean region.

The GEF biodiversity add-on project contains three main objectives:

a) Capacity assessment for Taxonomy and revision : To carry out any additional assessment of capacity development needs required for the effective and efficient implementation of the priority objectives of the NBSAP. This is in accordance with the GEF Guidelines for Additional Funding of Biodiversity Enabling Activities (Expedited Procedures) issued in February 2000 and CoP Decisions II/7, IV/1 D, V/9 (priority), VI/5, VI/8, VI/23, VI/24 of the Conference of the Parties.
