The goal of the proposed project would be to preserve the biodiversity in the El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve buffer and influence zones. The specific project objective would be: to conserve biodiversity and increase habitat in the productive landscape of the El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve buffer and influence zones by (i) preserving coffee cultivated under diverse shade trees, (ii) reconverting other coffee production regimes, and (iii) promoting other sustainable production opportunities.

The GEF MSP would support implementation of activities designed to address global environmental objectives, particularly those related to carbon sequestration. Specifically, the proposed GEF MSP would support targeted research to: (a) explore carbon sequestration impacts associated with improved land management practices in several production systems associated with the milpa; and (b) determine the social variables that possibly influence the process of adoption of practices to both increase soil carbon content and improve productivity of farmer resources.

The proposed project activities will remove barriers related to i) improving the solar water heating quality, ii) reducing the price and improve affordability, iii) increasing awareness and iv) improving a policy context favourable for solar water heater market development. The GEF support is requested to cover the costs of activities that would catalyze penetration of this medium term market through a promotional phase whereby 100,000 sq.m. would be installed during a 4-year period resulting in direct Carbon abatements of about 350,000 tonnes.

The project’s global environment objective is to demonstrate the economic feasibility of solar thermal based power generation worldwide by disseminating the corresponding experience with the aim of reducing project costs in the long-term. Furthermore, the it will reduce emissions of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. The project involves the construction and operation of a solar/fossil fuel hybrid power station in the range of 150 MW capacity. The Independent Power Producer (IPP) will be secured through either a Build Own Operate and Transfer (BOOT) or Build Own Operate (BOO) scheme.

The project will test and refine an approach to achieve sustainable economic development of coastal zone resources through a strategic development planning process that integrates their ecological, social and physical values, and balances the varying interests involved in their management.

This project will assist the national Government to meet its obligations under the Convention on Biological Diversity.

The project seeks to achieve the collaborative management of the Northwest Biosphere Reserve, by building capacity among stakeholders to enable a real involvement of local decision makers at different levels in the management process, with aim of reversing negative tendencies (especially the processes of desertification) and conserving existing biological diversity.

The project would support protected area (PA) management and natural resource management in the Peruvian Amazon particularly by indigenous peoples. The government is seeking to expand effective forest conservation in the Amazon region to cover approximately 10 percent of the biome through the establishment of up to 9 new protected areas covering at least 5.1 m hectares.

To demonstrate PV’s effectiveness in addressing distribution system capacity issues, a 1 MW distributed generation PV power plant is proposed to be built and integrated into the 80 MW distribution network of the Cagayan de Oro Power & Light Company (CEPALCO), a private utility operation on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines.

In this project, the GEF would aim to finance the incremental costs of promoting coastal and marine biodiversity conservation and sustainable use in the coastal waters of Mindanao, Philippines. Mindanao has received little attention to date with regard to conservation of its marine biodiversity resources.
