With the objective of reducing greenhouse gases, the proposed Project would assist the Government in exploiting developing the countries geothermal resources to establish in the Podhale region of Southern Poland a new district heating system with supplementary gas-fired peaking capacity.

To date, the first two tranches have eliminated more than 2,500 MT of annual consumption. The total annual phase-out will reach 10,813 MT ODP by early 2000.

This Project will protect critical sites for marine biological diversity, including coral reefs, mangroves and seagrass areas, within the core zones of large multiple-use marine protected areas (MPAs) in the Aleipata And Safata Districts of Upolu Island. It will demonstrate a model and innovative district-level approach to community-based management and protection of marine biodiversity that has wider application in Samoa, the Pacific Islands region, and globally.

The key global environment objective of the proposed Project is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through cost-effective and relatively risk free investments to displace grid-supplied electricity with electricity generated more efficiently by a combined cycle CHP plant.

The project will help the Government of Slovenia to achieve GHG mitigation targets specified in preliminary results of a GEF sponsored Enabling Activity. It is expected that the removal of technical, institutional, information, and financial barriers to increased use of biomass as an energy source will lead to expeditious growth of the market for biomass co-generation technologies.

The first major objective is to plan, and acquire land and develop a system of protected areas that is representative of Namaqualand’s biodiversity. The second objective is to strengthen these conservation initiatives by creating opportunities for local communities to benefit from these protected areas. The third objective is to assess the economic value of conservation in comparison to alternative, often competing forms of land use and to use the results of the analysis as a means of influencing policy on land use.

The project aims to create a sustainable technical, institutional and financial infrastructure to support PV market penetration. As a result of the project, growing energy demand in semi-urban Sudan would be met with PV instead of diesel systems. The project will help facilitate the development of government policy regulations that will create a favorable environment to generate 1.2 MW of installed PV capacity per year over the next 15 years.

The project would contribute to institutional learning in the conservation arena by operationalizing protected area management in 2 key globally important and representative sites, namely the Central Suriname Nature Reserve (CSNR), the single largest tropical forest reserve in the Guayana Shield, and the Sipaliwini Nature Reserve (SNR) in south Suriname.

The main global environment objective of this project is to develop and demonstrate at a pilot stage the capacity of the Syrian Arab Republic to meet GHG reduction commitments. That is, a global environmental issue will be integrated with local decision-making processes and policy development and implementation. Although any reduction in emissions due to the project’s direct efficiency gains may be small, the potential benefits of integrated, informed policy and regulatory development are very great.

This project will assist the national Government to meet its obligations under the Convention on Biological Diversity.
